Exhibition Update: Faces of Asia

Thursday, September 18th @ 4:18 PMpost viewed 57 times

Round 3 of the exhibition selection process was well attended and we welcomed several new faces to the CMPG as well as a couple of returning members.  We reviewed over 30 entries and added about half to the shortlist - you can view the current shortlist here.  The standard of entries from members of all levels is getting better as people can see the shortlisted work and with three weeks to go it looks as if choosing the winning shots will be no easy task.

There are three more selection meetings including the final one on October 8th which will not only review the latest submissions but pick the final 50 photographs to be exhibited in the show.  Put the date in your diary now!

In order to keep focussed in the runup to the show, the Photoshop Workshop originally set for late October will now be moved to November - keep an eye on the calendar for the actual date to be set.

STOP PRESS! The exhibition will now include a small section entitled Faces Of Asia which will just feature portraits in black and white with a print size of 12 x 9 inches.  Close ups with impact and faces that tell a story are the criteria.  Here are some examples of pictures to be reviewed for this section.

Photoshop CS3’s Black & White adjustment (Image>Adjustment>Black & White or ALT+SHIFT+CRTL B) does a good conversion – don’t just convert to greyscale or de-saturate the image as the result is disappointing.

This feature may give you the opportunity to review your archive in a different light and come up with some new submissions.  Hurry – the last date for entries is October 8th and as the impact of this display depends on quantity to some extent we’d like plenty to choose from.

Please keep the filenames short and put some kind of ID in them so we know the author if you're not able to make it to the selection meeting to claim them.  Uploads for shortlist review should be JPGs of less than 2mb - we will request full resolution files of the final selection on October 9th and you'll have a week to prepare yours for printing.

Exhibition Entries - We Need More!

Tuesday, September 16th @ 10:14 PMpost viewed 42 times

Looks like we have eight or nine members who have taken the time to prepare and send in their files and we need more.  OK, I think given there's a couple of weeks to go we'll get up to dozen contributors but four each from a quarter of our membership doesn't really show what we can do.  Come on, give us your best shot!  Details below or via the Home Page.

EXHIBITION SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Monday, September 1st @ 12:01 PMpost viewed 169 times

We’re having an exhibition of members’ work in early November and have been offered space in Airport Plaza (Nov 1-9) and the Shangri-La Hotel lobby (TBA).  In order to turn this into a reality, we need as many members as possible to submit pictures for the selection process.  Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Five of your best pictures taken during the last two years.
  • Any subject but we’d like to keep the theme of the show as Asia which includes South East Asia, China and India.
  • In addition to being outstanding pictures, submissions need to be of sufficient technical quality to be printed around 18 x 12 inches at 240 dpi or more.
  • There will be a cost to members of 350 baht for each picture selected to be in the exhibition which will cover printing and mounting.  Prints will be offered for sale during the show so that it’s possible for you to actually make a small profit.  Pictures unsold must be collected by the author or disposed of for the benefit of the CMPG to fund group activities, or a charity of your choice.
  • Technical help with post processing will be available to those who feel they have the right material but lack the means to prepare it for show.
  • For some notes on how pictures will be judged see below or download the pdf file "Critique Checklist" from the Rescources folder in the file sharing section.

Technical analysis

  1. Is the photograph properly exposed?
  2. Is the contrast/saturation too high or too low?
  3. How sharp is the focus? Is the focal plane in the right place?
  4. Is Depth-of-Field too shallow? Too deep?
  5. Was an appropriate shutter speed used? Is there any blur from camera shake?

Composition and aesthetic qualities

  1. Is the image interesting and/or informative.
  2. Is the intended subject obvious?
  3. Does the image stand on its own or need some additional explanation?
  4. Does it communicate what the author intended?
  5. Is there unnecessary empty space?
  6. Could the camera have been zoomed in or out, panned left or right and/or raised or lowered to improve composition within the frame?
  7. Is the image simplified?
  8. Any dismemberment going on? Chopped-off heads, feet, etc.? If so, does it work for the overall image?
  9. Is there undue background noise/clutter?
  10. What about distracting elements (a tree growing out of someone's head, for example)?

My files are up to 80 m bite and TIFF's. Should I upload as JPEGS? If JPEGS should they be reduced down to 1 or 2 M bite?

Thanks

David:  Please only post JPG files to this website.  1-2 MB is fine but please, nothing larger than that.

12 x 16 will cut 2 inches off the length of a 35mm negative or a digital file.

maybe 10 x 15?  its a nice size and matches most photos.   2/3 ratio.   4x6 8x12 10x15 20x30

just an idea...  Smile

Apologies, it should read 12 x 18 inches and it's just a guide although for the sake of a cohesive look we're trying to keep the display prints around that size ( and 12 x 24, 12 x 30) except for the Faces of Asia feature which need to be 9 x 12 and preferably portrait.  I've been having fun going through my archives just looking for faces and come up with quite a lot and even if it's a small crop and a bit noisy it tends to look more acceptable in B&W. I think we'll have a snappy yes/no review session on this category.  Please submit some if you can.  I think I'll put some of mine in a separate gallery to try and remind other people to enter.
