I got CS3 disk from Pantip Plaza with 3 viruses on it (disk #990 from their catalog):

Backdoor.Graybird

Trojan Horse

W32.DSS.Trojan

Needless to say, I am not using this disk except as a coaster or light reflector.

I checked the Lightroom 1.3 et al disk that came in the set with CS3 and found 13 hacking tools and trojans.

Unlike the other disk, though, this one installed without Norton alerting me.

I have run 2 full system scans and two full Webroot Spysweeper scans and found nothing. My system is brand new, just days old, so I feel fairly safe.

Subject: More on Pantip & S/W CDs

1. Finally took bad CDs back. Couple of results. One is that the shop just gets their CDs from BKK and the sales people are just sales people; know absolutely nothing about content. Second, they had no idea of how to handle the problem. They changed their labeling system since I bought the CDs several months ago (didn't find the problem with my old compture, first loading) so at first they didn't think it was theirs. Then, thirdly, one of the CDs was a blue color that they say they don't use. So, since the cost was low and since they seemed to want to help but were genuinely perplexed, I told them just to alert the BKK office.

Because of the "blue" CD, next time I buy any S/W, I will check the CD itself when they hand it to me to see that it conforms to their normal issue.

2. The shops on the first floor and the 3rd floor use different types/color CDs and different coding labels and methods. So it is easy, once you know the scheme, to tell from which store the S/W comes.

Peter,

Good on you for taking them back but it's no surprise that the staff don't know what's on the disks? How could they with all the hundreds of new pirated copies they get every month? Sadly, your warnings are unlikely to make it to BKK but at least the shop will remember you!
